Kokata Rape Murder Case: A group of prominent personalities, including former High Court judges and former bureaucrats, have demanded justice for the victim of the Kolkata rape case. They said on Wednesday (August 21) that the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata is a reminder of the deteriorating socio-cultural landscape in West Bengal and the grave dangers faced by women.

The joint statement by a group of prominent personalities alleged that the incident highlights the “apathy, misgovernance and lack of accountability” prevailing in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. It reflects the state government’s “apparent tendency to protect the criminals rather than protect the victim and a serious failure to provide justice”.

‘Not an isolated incident’, say prominent personalities

The eminent personalities said, “This is not an isolated incident in West Bengal. A common picture emerges that the state has witnessed violence among various sections for the past several years.” The prominent personalities said that from violence during elections to the recent rapes, the law and order situation in the state needs serious introspection and immediate corrective measures need to be taken.
